Mom's Party Mix

Do you have one of those recipes that's been used so much the paper is torn, taped up and stained? Those are always the best, aren't they? The one's that have been loved the most. Every family has one. This one is ours. It's not even a meal! It's just a snack, but it's the BEST.

Mom's Party Mix. Traditionally only made during the holidays, but I like it 365-days a year, so I make it whenever I'm craving it. Which is a lot.

My mom adapted her recipe from my grandma's, using only the ingredients she liked best. She also told me that you have to double the sauce. It's not on the recipe card, but that was her secret to perfect party mix: more butter.

Mom's Party Mix

Prep Time: 5 minutes

Cook Time: 90 minutes to 2 hours

Total Time: 2 hours 5 minutes

Servings: enough for a party...and then some

1lb unsalted butter

3 Tbsp Worchestershire sauce

3 tsp liquid smoke

1 tsp garlic salt

4 tsp onion salt

4 tsp celery salt

1lb peanuts

4 cups plain Cheerio's

4 cups Rice Chex

4 cups Wheat Chex

4 cups Corn Chex

1 bag/package of pretzels, thin sticks

  1. Preheat oven to 250 degrees.

  2. Combine peanuts, Cheerio's, rice + wheat + corn Chex and pretzels in a large roasting pan. Toss together until all ingredients are well mixed.

  3. In a sauce pan over medium heat, melt butter. Add in worchestershire, liquid smoke and the garlic + onion + celery salts and whisk until well combined.

  4. Pour sauce over party mix and toss until everything is fully combined and the mixture is coated.

  5. Bake in oven for two hours, stirring the mixture every thirty minutes.

  6. Check the mix at 90 minutes and if the sauce is baked in, remove. If the mixture is still slightly wet, continue to bake for another fifteen minutes. Check again, and if needed, bake for another fifteen minutes. Remove from oven. Do not exceed a two hour bake time.

  7. Allow to cool and enjoy!
